Happy Summer from Carroll Children’s Center!!
Summertime fun can bring some summertime blues…
We hope everyone is enjoying their summer vacations in a safe and relaxing manner.
As we embark on new adventures filled with making memories; or are just excited to take a break from school, please read our summer newsletter.
We are mask optional for well families, but we ask those being seen for illnesses to please wear a mask while in our office to help decrease the spread of germs.
Please call in advance if you need to cancel an appointment. Please refer to our website for our “No Show” policy.
Please remember to call to schedule your Annual physical and Preparticipation Sports Physical Examination before school starts.
Sports Physicals
The American Academy of Pediatrics, in conjunction with the American Heart Association, recommends a Preparticipation Physical Evaluation at least 6-8 weeks prior to starting a sports season.
Anyone watching football remembers the scary moment Damar Hamlin and his family went through on national television from a routine tackle. Lives can change in the blink of an eye. Predicting who may develop a cardiac event while playing sports is very difficult. That is why we feel anyone playing sports should have a Sports Physical Clearance visit if they have not had their annual physical within 6 months. Unfortunately, within a 6 month period, we may develop injuries or other illnesses that may put us at risk while playing sports.
What is the difference between an annual physical and a Preparticipation Physical Exam (Sports Clearance) visit?
- A Sports Clearance Visit is focused on whether your child is healthy enough to play sports. It is concentrated on evaluating your child’s heart and fitness to determine there are no risks to your child in playing sports.
- Annual physicals are focused on the overall health and well-being of your child. It reviews development, nutrition, mental health, immunizations, and preventative or anticipatory guidance.
- Focused “other problem” visits are focused visits for illnesses, rashes, headaches, abdominal pain, etc. These are focused on certain issues and concerns.
If you are outdoors; please remember to apply and reapply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15-50 every 60 minutes to anyone over 6 months of age. Constantly reapply after swimming, sweating, or drying off with a towel.
Water Safety Tips:
- Use floatation devices for children that haven’t fully learned how to swim.
- Supervise ALL children near water sources to prevent drowning.
- Empty all buckets, bathtubs, and wading pools immediately after use.
- Learn CPR.
Lyme Disease
We would rather have limes in our food and drinks, not Lyme in our blood. Lyme disease is caused by bacteria that can be in the stomach of the deer tick, a very small red-brown tick. Not all tick bites lead to Lyme disease. The tick needs to be attached for over 36 hours to possibly transmit the bacteria. So the quicker a tick is pulled off the less risk. If you are concerned your child has Lyme disease, please call our office to schedule an appointment.
Have a safe and fun summer!
